BANGKOK, April 19 (Xinhua) -- A pickup truck carrying 21 passengers lost control and crashed off the road in northern Thailand on Saturday, leaving nine dead and 10 injured, according to Thai media.

The accident took place in Pua District of Nan Province, where the pickup truck hit a guardrail and overturned at a steep downhill curve.

Five people died at the scene, and three died after being sent to the hospital that day. Another injured person died on Sunday morning, bringing the total death toll to nine. The injured ranged in age from 8 to 58, including four students.

Boonsong Nikornthuean, chief of Pua Police Station, said that it is suspected that the cause of the accident was speeding on the curve and poor road conditions and visibility, noting the specific cause is still under investigation.
