Thailand marks world environment day, advances climate act to combat "global boiling"

BANGKOK, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Thailand hosted the World Environment Day 2026 event here on Friday, calling for integrated action to combat the "global boiling" crisis and advancing the country's first comprehensive climate legislation.

In her keynote address, Dechen Tsering, regional director for Asia and the Pacific of the United Nations Environment Programme, underscored that the climate responds to tangible execution rather than promises.

Tsering called for an accelerated global transformation that includes transitioning rapidly to renewable energy, phasing down dependence on coal and fossil fuels, implementing early warning systems, and building climate-proof infrastructure in coastal urban areas.

She noted that while national policy is vital, solving the crisis requires cross-sector participation, linking private sector green investments with public behavioral changes such as conserving energy, using public transport, and reducing waste.

Thai Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin affirmed that the government has integrated climate action as a core national priority, stressing that the crisis is not the responsibility of any single agency but a shared challenge for the global community.

Suchart said this annual event serves as a crucial platform to raise awareness and invite all sectors to jointly adapt, change and build a Thailand ready to cope with "global boiling," ensuring that healthy environments and natural resources will be passed to the next generation.

To keep Thailand on track for its carbon neutrality and 2050 net-zero targets, he said the ministry is proactively establishing environmental guidelines to accommodate future mega-investments, particularly the influx of data centers.

Furthermore, the ministry has successfully pushed the draft Climate Change Act, the country's first master climate law, through the cabinet.

The legislation will establish crucial mechanisms, including a climate fund, a carbon credit trading system, and future carbon pricing measures, the minister added.
